I recently had the opportunity to take CIMdata’s PLM Certificate Program and the following quote covered in the course material really struck me.

“Up to 80% of the work done in an engineering department is identical or very similar to work done previously” Research by Arthur D Little

Ok, so 80% might be a bit of an exaggeration, but the fact is that your engineers are wasting time reinventing the wheel. Why? Because they can’t easily find things like previous drawings and designs, and when they do find them they don’t trust them because they don’t know if they are the final versions or not. So, they have to recreate them.

What does this mean?

It means your company is not only wasting time, it’s wasting money.

It means your company isn’t being as innovative as it could be.

It means your company is not getting new products out the door as fast as it could be.

Now is the time to take a look at an enterprise PLM system. With a single repository for all product related information, your engineers will not only know where to look for info, they will reuse it with confidence.

The benefits of content reuse include: faster time to market, more resources for innovative product development, cost savings and much more.

So take a look around your organization. Are your engineers wasting time ($) doing rework? If so, it’s time to take a closer look at PLM.
